Celebrating Christmas in God’s Own Country
A Unique Blend of Traditions
Kerala has one of the oldest Christian communities in the world, making Christmas a grand affair here. The streets of Cochin and Munnar are adorned with giant paper stars and lights. Churches hold Midnight Masses that are rich in tradition and spirituality, often followed by community feasts featuring Kerala delicacies like Appam and Stew.
The Cochin Carnival
If you are here for New Year’s, the Cochin Carnival in Fort Kochi is unmissable. A legacy of the Portuguese colonial era, the carnival features a massive procession of elephants, folk dances, fancy dress competitions, and the burning of the giant ‘Pappanji’ effigy at midnight on New Year’s Eve to bid farewell to the old year.
Misty Munnar Winters
December and January turn Munnar into a misty paradise. The temperatures drop, making the tea gardens look even more ethereal. It is the perfect time to sip on hot local tea while watching the fog roll over the Anamudi peak. The cool weather is ideal for trekking and exploring the wildlife at Eravikulam National Park.
