About Chennai: The Cultural and Economic Hub of South India

Introduction to Chennai

Chennai, also known as Madras, is the capital of Tamil Nadu, located on the Coromandel Coast off the Bay of Bengal. As one of the largest cultural, economic, and educational centers in South India, Chennai plays a pivotal role in the region’s development. According to the 2011 Indian census, it is the sixth-most populous city and the fourth-most populous urban agglomeration in India. The Chennai Metropolitan Area, encompassing the city and its adjoining regions, ranks as the 36th-largest urban area globally by population.

Chennai: A Global Tourism and Cultural Destination

Chennai is a top destination for tourists, ranking as the 43rd-most visited city globally in 2015 and among the most-visited Indian cities by foreign tourists. The Chennai culture is a blend of tradition and modernity, earning it accolades such as being named one of the top ten cities to visit in 2015 by Lonely Planet and the “hottest” city by the BBC for its mix of modern and traditional values. National Geographic listed Chennai as the only South Asian city in its 2015 “Top 10 Food Cities,” while Lonely Planet ranked it the ninth-best cosmopolitan city globally. The city also thrives as a major film production center, being home to the Tamil film industry, often referred to as Kollywood. Chennai’s urban economy ranks as the fifth-largest in India, and the city is classified as a beta-level city in the Global Cities Index. Additionally, Chennai is part of the Smart Cities Mission, aiming to develop it into one of India’s 100 smart cities.

Health Tourism and Quality of Living

Known as India’s health capital, Chennai attracts 45% of health tourists visiting India and 30-40% of domestic health tourists, offering world-class medical facilities. The Quality of Living Survey rated Chennai as the safest city in India, making it a preferred destination for both residents and visitors. The city also had a significant expatriate population, growing from 35,000 in 2009 to over 100,000 by 2016, reflecting its global appeal.
