Northeast India, the easternmost region of the country, is a land of unparalleled beauty and diversity. Connected to the rest of India via the narrow Siliguri Corridor in West Bengal (21 to 40 km wide), the region is bordered by Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and China (southern Tibet). It comprises the Seven Sister States—Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura—along with the Himalayan state of Sikkim, which was annexed to India in 1975 and recognized as part of Northeast India in the 1990s.
Much of Northeast India was not part of political India until the 19th century. The Brahmaputra Valley in Assam was integrated into British India in 1824, with the hill regions annexed later. Sikkim joined the Indian Union through a referendum in 1975. The region is considered one of the most challenging areas to govern due to its history of separatist movements among tribal communities, whose languages are related to Burmese, reflecting their distinct cultural identity.
Northeast India constitutes about 8% of India’s total area, roughly three-quarters the size of Maharashtra. Its population, as per the 2011 census, is approximately 40 million, about 3.1% of India’s total population, comparable to the population of Odisha. The region shares over 4,500 km of international borders with China, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Bhutan, making it geopolitically significant. Physiographically, it can be categorized into the Eastern Himalayas, Northeast Hills (Patkai-Naga Hills and Lushai Hills), and the Brahmaputra and Barak Valley Plains. Two-thirds of the area is hilly terrain, with altitudes ranging from sea level to over 7,000 meters above mean sea level (MSL).
Northeast India lies at the confluence of Indo-Malayan, Indo-Chinese, and Indian biogeographical realms, boasting a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers, severe monsoons, and mild winters. Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim experience a montane climate with cold, snowy winters and mild summers. The region receives high rainfall, averaging around 10,000 mm annually, leading to challenges like floods and high seismic activity. It is home to some of India’s last remaining rainforests, supporting diverse flora, fauna, and crop species, alongside reserves of petroleum and natural gas that constitute a fifth of India’s total potential.
The region is dominated by the mighty Brahmaputra-Barak river systems and their tributaries. Apart from the Brahmaputra, Barak, and Imphal valleys, and some flatlands in Meghalaya and Tripura, the terrain is predominantly hilly, interspersed with valleys and plains. This unique geography, combined with its biodiversity, makes Northeast India a hotspot for Northeast India travel and ecotourism.
The states are officially recognized under the North Eastern Council (NEC), established in 1971 to foster development across the eight states. The North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd (NEDFi) was incorporated in 1995, and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) was set up in 2001 to address the region’s developmental needs. These initiatives aim to bridge infrastructural gaps and promote economic growth in this culturally rich region.
From the snow-capped peaks of Sikkim to the lush greenery of Meghalaya’s hills, Northeast India offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural diversity, and adventure. Whether you’re drawn to Sikkim tourism, the tribal heritage of Nagaland, or the tea gardens of Assam, this region promises an unforgettable experience for every traveler.
