Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga

The Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas, located near Nashik in Maharashtra. It holds unique significance as it is believed to embody the three primary Hindu deities—Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva—in its lingam. The temple is situated at the source of the Godavari River, India’s second-longest river. Legend attributes the presence of the Godavari here to the penance of Sage Gautama, who invoked the river to purify himself. The magnificent temple structure, largely built by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao in the 18th century, is a prime example of classical Indian architecture. Pilgrims visit Trimbakeshwar to seek blessings for spiritual purification, fulfillment of desires, and salvation.

Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga

The Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga, considered the last or 12th Jyotirlinga, is located near Aurangabad, Maharashtra, in close proximity to the famous Ellora Caves. This ancient shrine is deeply embedded in Hindu mythology, particularly associated with the legend of Ghushma, a devout Shiva devotee. According to the legend, her unwavering faith brought Lord Shiva to resurrect her son and reside in the form of a Jyotirlinga here. The current structure, a red rock architectural marvel, was primarily reconstructed by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar in the 18th century, showcasing exquisite carvings and sculptures that draw both devotees and architectural enthusiasts.

Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga

The Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is situated amidst the breathtaking Sahyadri hills near Pune, Maharashtra, within a dense forest that forms part of a wildlife sanctuary. This sacred site is particularly popular among pilgrims and nature lovers. The temple is linked to various legends, one of the most prominent being Lord Shiva’s manifestation to defeat the formidable demon Bhima, son of Kumbhakarna, from whom the river Bhima also originates. The temple’s architecture exhibits a mix of ancient and modern styles. Beyond its spiritual allure, the surrounding area is a biodiversity hotspot, famous for housing the endemic Indian Giant Squirrel.

Aurangabad

Aurangabad, a city in Maharashtra, India, is a historical treasure trove known for its significant Mughal and ancient Indian heritage. Founded in 1610 by Malik Ambar, the Prime Minister of Murtaza Nizam Shah II, it later became the capital of Aurangzeb, the sixth Mughal emperor. The city is a gateway to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the stunning Ajanta and Ellora Caves, which showcase exquisite rock-cut architecture and ancient art.
