The Char Dham Yatra Tradition
The Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand is one of the most sacred pilgrimage circuits in Hinduism. It comprises four Himalayan shrines, Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath, which together form a complete spiritual journey through the Garhwal region. The yatra is believed to wash away sins and grant moksha to those who complete it with devotion. Every year, lakhs of pilgrims from across India and abroad undertake this arduous yet rewarding journey.
Yamunotri: The Abode of Goddess Yamuna
Yamunotri is the source of the Yamuna River and the first of the four Dhams. The temple, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, stands at an altitude of about 3,291 metres. According to legend, the sage Asit Muni used to bathe in both the Yamuna and the Ganges daily, and when he grew too old to travel, a stream of the Ganges appeared beside the Yamuna for him. The Surya Kund, a natural hot water spring near the temple, is believed to have medicinal properties, and the Divya Shila, a sacred rock, is worshipped before the deity.
Gangotri: The Source of the Ganges
Gangotri is the second Dham and the source of the Ganges. The temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, is situated at an altitude of about 3,100 metres on the banks of the Bhagirathi River. According to mythology, King Bhagirathi performed intense penance to bring the Ganges down to earth to liberate the souls of his ancestors. The river is worshipped as a mother and goddess, and taking a dip in its icy waters is considered a purifying experience. The temple is surrounded by deodar forests and towering Himalayan peaks.
Kedarnath: The Abode of Lord Shiva
Kedarnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and the third of the four Char Dham shrines. Situated at an altitude of about 3,583 metres in the Rudraprayag district, the temple is believed to have been established by the Pandavas and later revived by Adi Shankaracharya. The ancient stone temple survived the catastrophic floods of 2013 and continues to be one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India. The 16 km trek from Gaurikund is both a physical and spiritual challenge.
Badrinath: The Sacred Seat of Vishnu
Badrinath, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is the most important of the four Char Dham shrines. Located on the banks of the Alaknanda River at an altitude of about 3,133 metres, the temple is believed to have been established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. The idol of Lord Badri Narayan is made of black saligram stone. Legend says that Lord Vishnu performed penance here and Goddess Lakshmi sheltered him in the form of a Badri tree, giving the site its name. The Tapt Kund, a natural hot water spring, is believed to have healing properties.
Adi Shankaracharya and the Char Dham
Adi Shankaracharya, the great philosopher and reformer, unified the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit in the 8th century. He established the temples at Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri and appointed priests to manage them. His vision was to bind the diverse regions of India through a shared spiritual path. The Char Dham Yatra is often considered a complete Himalayan pilgrimage and a lifelong dream for many devotees.
Haridwar and Rishikesh: Gateway to the Himalayas
Haridwar, meaning the gateway to God, is where the Ganges enters the northern plains. The evening Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri is one of the most soulful ceremonies in India. Rishikesh, known as the Yoga Capital of the World, is home to numerous ashrams, temples and the famous Laxman Jhula. For travellers from Delhi, these twin towns offer the perfect spiritual introduction to the Himalayan yatra.
A Journey of Faith and Endurance
The Char Dham Yatra is a test of both faith and endurance. The treks to Yamunotri and Kedarnath, the long drives through the mountains and the unpredictable Himalayan weather all add to the challenge. Yet, for devotees, the darshan of all four Dhams makes every step worthwhile. The shared experience of walking, praying and chanting together creates a sense of community that lasts long after the journey ends.
Dham Opening and Closing Advisory: Yamunotri – 19 April 2026, Gangotri – 19 April 2026, Kedarnath – 22 April 2026, Badrinath – 23 April 2026. Guests should reconfirm the final opening and closing status before travel.
Registration Advisory: Biometric registration is mandatory for Kedarnath and Badrinath. For Char Dham, registration may be required for all Dhams as per government rules. Guests must carry a valid government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar / Passport / Voter ID) for all travellers.
Trek Advisory: Yamunotri involves approximately 6 km trek one way from Janki Chatti. Kedarnath involves approximately 16 km trek one way from Gaurikund. Pony, palanquin, palki and helicopter services are available at extra cost. These treks are moderately difficult.
