From Gaurikund, begin your 16 km trek to Kedarnath (pony, palanquin or helicopter at extra cost). On arrival, check in to your accommodation and proceed for Kedarnath Darshan, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and part of the Char Dham. The Do Dham Yatra from Delhi
Starting from Delhi, the Do Dham Yatra offers a complete Himalayan pilgrimage experience with the convenience of a metro departure. The journey passes through Haridwar and Rishikesh before ascending into the Garhwal Himalayas. It covers the two most prominent Char Dham shrines, Kedarnath and Badrinath, and offers devotees a compact yet deeply moving spiritual experience.
Kedarnath: The Abode of Lord Shiva
Kedarnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and the third of the four Char Dham shrines. Situated at an altitude of about 3,583 metres in the Rudraprayag district, the temple is believed to have been established by the Pandavas and later revived by Adi Shankaracharya. The ancient stone temple withstood the catastrophic floods of 2013 and continues to be one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India. The 16 km trek from Gaurikund is both a physical and spiritual challenge.
Badrinath: The Sacred Seat of Vishnu
Badrinath, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is the most important of the four Char Dham shrines. Located on the banks of the Alaknanda River at an altitude of about 3,133 metres, the temple is believed to have been established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. The idol of Lord Badri Narayan is made of black saligram stone. Legend says that Lord Vishnu performed penance here and Goddess Lakshmi sheltered him in the form of a Badri tree, giving the site its name. The nearby Tapt Kund, a natural hot water spring, is believed to have healing properties.
Adi Shankaracharya and the Char Dham
Adi Shankaracharya, the great philosopher and reformer, unified the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit in the 8th century. He established the temples at Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri and appointed priests to manage them. His vision was to bind the diverse regions of India through a shared spiritual path. The Do Dham Yatra is often considered a concise yet complete Himalayan pilgrimage by many devotees.
The Prayags and the Holy Confluences
The route from Haridwar to Kedarnath and Badrinath passes through the Panch Prayag, the five sacred confluences of the Alaknanda River. Devprayag, where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda merge to form the Ganges, is the most significant. Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Nandaprayag and Vishnuprayag each carry deep mythological meaning. Taking a dip or offering prayers at these confluences is considered highly auspicious and forms an essential part of the yatra.
Haridwar and Rishikesh: Gateway to the Himalayas
Haridwar, meaning the gateway to God, is where the Ganges enters the northern plains. The evening Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri is one of the most soulful ceremonies in India. Rishikesh, known as the Yoga Capital of the World, is home to numerous ashrams, temples and the famous Laxman Jhula. For travellers from Delhi, these twin towns offer the perfect spiritual introduction to the Himalayan yatra.
Mana Village and the Last Frontier
Mana Village, about 3 km from Badrinath, is the last inhabited village before the India-China border. It is steeped in mythological significance, with sites such as Vyas Gufa, where Ved Vyas is believed to have composed the Mahabharata, and Ganesh Gufa, where Lord Ganesha is said to have written it down. The Saraswati River, visible here before disappearing underground, adds to the mystical charm of this remote settlement.

The long drives through the plains and hills, the 16 km trek to Kedarnath and the unpredictable Himalayan weather all add to the challenge. Registration Advisory: Biometric registration is mandatory for Kedarnath and Badrinath. Guests must carry a valid government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar / Passport / Voter ID) for all travellers. Registration requirements and Dham visit dates are subject to change as per Uttarakhand government guidelines.
Trek Advisory: Kedarnath involves approximately 16 km trek one way from Gaurikund. Pony, palanquin, palki and helicopter services are available at extra cost. This trek is moderately difficult. Guests with knee, heart, breathing or blood pressure issues should consult a doctor before travelling.
Weather and Route Advisory: Himalayan weather is unpredictable. Itinerary may change due to rain, landslides, roadblocks, snow or government restrictions. Any extra cost arising from such changes (extra stay, transport, food) must be borne by the guest.
