Mahabaleshwar: The Colonial Summer Capital of Bombay Sanctuary

Mahabaleshwar, situated at an elevation of 1,353 meters in the Western Ghats, carries a rich historical legacy dating back to the 13th century. Old Mahabaleshwar is home to the ancient Panchganga Temple, believed to be the holy origin point of five major rivers—Krishna, Venna, Koyna, Savitri, and Gayatri. During the 1820s, Sir John Malcolm, the Governor of Bombay, established Mahabaleshwar as a sanatorium and official summer capital for the Bombay Presidency. The British laid out roads, viewpoints, and colonial bungalows that continue to define the town’s charm today.

Panchgani and the Legacy of the Five Hills

Nestled just 19 kilometers down the ridge, Panchgani derives its name from the five surrounding hills of the Sahyadri range. Discovered by British officer John Chesson in the 1860s as a residential hill station, Panchgani was prized for its pleasant climate year-round. Chesson introduced foreign plant species, including strawberries, which thrived in the cool region’s red soil. Today, Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar produce over 85 percent of India’s total strawberries, making agricultural tourism a major attraction alongside its famous volcanic flat plateau, Table Land.

Maratha Heritage at Pratapgad Fort

Standing guard over the mountain passes near Mahabaleshwar is the historic Pratapgad Fort, commissioned by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1656. The fort gained legendary historical importance as the site of the famous Battle of Pratapgad between Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal Khan. Surrounded by thick evergreen forests and misty mountain valleys, the fort offers visitors a grand look into the military prowess and strategic engineering of the Maratha Empire.
