Rajasthan: The Land of Kings
Rajasthan, meaning the Land of Kings, is India’s largest state by area and one of its most storied. Carved out of the princely states of Rajputana after independence, it is a land of deserts, forts, palaces, and a living heritage of warrior clans and royal patronage. The state’s cities preserve centuries of art, architecture, music and craft that continue to shape its unique identity as one of the most beloved travel destinations in the world.
Jaipur: The Pink City
Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, was founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. It was India’s first planned city, laid out on a grid following ancient Vastu principles. The city earned the name Pink City when Maharaja Ram Singh painted its buildings terracotta pink to welcome the Prince of Wales in 1876. Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal, City Palace and Jantar Mantar stand as enduring symbols of the Kachwaha dynasty’s architectural ambition and scientific curiosity.
Pushkar and Ajmer: Sacred Rajasthan
Pushkar is home to one of the very few Brahma temples in the world and to the holy Pushkar Lake, which is believed to have been created by Lord Brahma himself. The town hosts the famous Pushkar Camel Fair each November. Nearby Ajmer is home to the Ajmer Sharif Dargah, the shrine of the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, visited by devotees of all faiths. Together they represent the deep spiritual fabric of Rajasthan.
Jodhpur: The Blue City
Jodhpur, founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha of the Rathore clan, was once the capital of the Marwar kingdom. Its skyline is dominated by the mighty Mehrangarh Fort, perched on a 120-metre cliff above the old city. The blue-painted houses of the old town give Jodhpur its famous nickname. Jaswant Thada, a marble cenotaph, and Umaid Bhawan Palace, one of the world’s largest private residences, add to its royal legacy.
Jaisalmer and Sam Sand Dunes: The Golden City
Jaisalmer, founded in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal, was a key staging post on the ancient Silk Route. Its golden-yellow sandstone architecture gives the city its famous glow. The Jaisalmer Fort, known as Sonar Qila, is one of the very few living forts in the world, with residents still living inside its walls. The intricately carved Patwon Ki Haveli and Nathmal Ki Haveli showcase the wealth of the historic merchant families. Nearby Sam Sand Dunes offer the classic Thar Desert experience with camel rides and sunset views.
Udaipur: The City of Lakes
Udaipur, founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II, was the capital of the Mewar kingdom. Surrounded by the Aravalli Hills and built around a series of artificial lakes, it is widely regarded as one of the most romantic cities in India. The City Palace complex, Jagdish Temple, Saheliyon Ki Bari and the island palaces of Lake Pichola together create a setting that has inspired poets, filmmakers and travellers for centuries.
Rajasthan’s Forts, Palaces and Architecture
Rajasthan’s forts and palaces are masterpieces of Rajput architecture, combining defensive engineering with artistic refinement. Jharokhas, jalis, chhatris and mirrored halls are hallmarks of the style. Many forts, such as Mehrangarh and Amber, are UNESCO World Heritage sites, listed under the Hill Forts of Rajasthan. The palaces of Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur still house royal families and heritage hotels, allowing travellers to experience living history.
Culture, Cuisine and Festivals of Rajasthan
Rajasthani culture is vibrant, colourful and deeply rooted in tradition. Folk dances like Ghoomar and Kalbeliya, music performed on the sarangi and kartal, and puppetry are part of daily life. Cuisine includes dal baati churma, laal maas, ker sangri and ghewar. Festivals such as Pushkar Fair, Teej, Gangaur and the Desert Festival draw visitors from around the world. The state’s handicrafts, from block prints to blue pottery, remain a living expression of its artistic heritage.
