Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga
The Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, located near Nashik in Maharashtra. It is unique among the Jyotirlingas as it embodies all three major Hindu deities: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The temple is situated at the source of the Godavari River, the longest river in Peninsular India. Legend has it that Sage Gautama performed severe penance here, and the river Godavari was brought to earth as a result. The current temple was built by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao in the 18th century. Devotees believe that visiting Trimbakeshwar can fulfill desires and grant salvation.
Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga
The Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga is another revered shrine, located near Aurangabad, Maharashtra, close to the Ellora Caves. It is considered the last or 12th Jyotirlinga on Earth. The temple holds significant mythological importance, associated with the legend of a devout woman named Ghushma who, through her unwavering devotion, brought Lord Shiva back to life. The temple was rebuilt in the 18th century by Ahilyabai Holkar, a Maratha queen. Its architecture is a beautiful example of ancient Indian temple design, attracting pilgrims and history enthusiasts alike.
Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga
The Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is nestled in the Sahyadri hills of Maharashtra, near Pune, and is surrounded by dense forests, making it a popular trekking destination. This Jyotirlinga is associated with the legend of Lord Shiva’s fierce form taken to defeat the demon Tripurasura, or, as another legend states, the demon Bhima. The temple’s architecture is a blend of old and new, with the main shrine being ancient. The area around the temple is a wildlife sanctuary, home to the Indian Giant Squirrel. Pilgrims visit not only for spiritual reasons but also to experience the serene natural beauty.
